NAMI EP OUT 4/30

“We purposefully chose “NAMI” to be the final single from our debut album. It’s not only the album’s strongest track, it turns out it represented the resolution we were searching for all along.”

So says Rival Waves songwriter and vocalist, Joel De La Garza, when discussing the song that anchors The NAMI EP. Slated for digital release April 30, 2024, on Lunar Drive Records, it is a 4-track collection of songs from the sessions that birthed the band’s 2023 debut LP, A Meaningless Chaos.

Tracked and mixed at The Bubble Recording Studio in Austin, Texas, by Chris “Frenchie” Smith (…Trail of Dead, Gary Clark Jr, Jet, The Toadies),the songs on The NAMI EP get a bit more personal in theme than its predecessor. Where many of the topics in A Meaningless Chaos dealt with societal ills on a macro level, The NAMI EP looks more inward. The results are four songs dealing with notions of personal resilience, reflection, and sacrifice all in the name of love and survival.

While “NAMI“ an indie grunge rock anthem capturing themes of release, freedom, and escape, found its way onto 2023‘s debut LP, the EP includes three unreleased songs from the A Meaningless Chaos sessions. “What She Could Be“ is a study of overcoming isolation to achieve the potential of the human spirit, “Ironwill“ is a modern twist on early 90‘s grunge emphasizing themes of resilience and defiance in the face of oppression, while “The Greater Fool“ is a powerfully catchy melody blending with themes of sacrificing everything for love.

Like A Meaningless Chaos, this EP captures a live, raw immediacy that the times, and the album’s themes, reflect. “Anyone can be melodic or heartfelt,” says Smith. “But to be melodic, heartfelt, AND dangerous…well, there’s a level of edge in that that might just rattle people.” That edge Smith alludes to was delivered by the band, who had come off of a series of incendiary performances that had the songs airtight and ready to track. That preparation, along with the Grammy-nominated producer’s collaborative, take-no-prisoners approach to the sessions provides the EP with its palpable energy.
The result is a powerfully purposeful collection of songs around the universal themes of love, loss, anger, fear, and, ultimately, release.
